PITTSBURGH — A Pennsylvania Superior Court panel has ordered a judge to hold a bail hearing for a boy who has been held for more than three years on charges of murdering a pregnant woman and her unborn child.

The Superior Court panel ruled Friday that a Lawrence County judge must hold a hearing for 14-year-old Jordan Brown by Thursday, and indicated the local judge erred in not holding a hearing for the boy sooner.

Prosecutors say Brown, of Wampum, shotgunned the woman as she lay in bed in February, 2009.

Brown’s attorneys say the boy has been held too long and should be released until his trial.

Pitt offers reward in bomb threatsPITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information about a wave of recent bomb threats on campus.A bomb threat on Friday was the seventh since February, and the 42-story Cathedral of Learning was evacuated for the fifth time.Pitt spokesman Robert Hill says the school is determined to bring the person or persons responsible to justice. Hill says there hasn’t been a similar wave of threats since he came to the school in 1999.University police, the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service say they have a “person of interest” in the investigation.Anyone with information about the threats is urged to contact the University of Pittsburgh Police Department.

Lime counters odor in milk cleanupYORK SPRINGS — Officials in central Pennsylvania aren’t crying over a few thousand gallons of spilled milk. They’re sprinkling some lime on it.Hanover’s The Evening Sun newspaper reports crews sprinkled lime to prevent the milk from curdling, which could cause a horrendous smell and attract flies.A truck that overturned Thursday near York Springs spilled about 3,000 gallons of milk into a creek. State environmental officials cleaned up about 90 percent of it with vacuum trucks.Concerns then turned to milk that had seeped into the soil.A spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says putting lime in the soil chews up the milk’s fat, neutralizing the odor.

Texting case snares teacher and coachCONNELLSVILLE — A southwestern Pennsylvania teacher and coach is facing allegations he traded racy pictures with an underage student.Police say 26-year-old Kevin Lee Bell sent the 17-year-old girl text messages earlier this month, including pictures of his genitals and a video of himself engaged in a sex act.State police say they began investigating this week after the student told her mother about the messages.Investigators who interviewed the Connellsville Area High School teacher and girls’ basketball coach say he admitted sending the messages.Bell was charged Wednesday with disseminating explicit sexual material to a minor and corruption of minors. He has not been arraigned.School officials declined to discuss Bell’s employment status but said they’ve taken appropriate action.Bell doesn’t have a listed telephone number.
