An expert in enamel
PITTSBURGH — Enamelist Alexandra Raphael will give a free artist talk at 6 p.m. Friday at the Society for Contemporary Craft, 2100 Smallman St. A reception is planned for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
An exhibition of her work opens Friday and continues through June 30.
Raphael is an expert in the ancient craft of enameling. Largely self-taught, she specializes in plique-à-jour (backless enamel) and cloisonné (technique for decorating metalwork) jewelry.
Based in London, she has exhibited her work worldwide and won numerous awards. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, London.
She will talk about her new “Celestial Dream Series,” which showcases ethereal images in rich colors reflected within gold and silver that can be achieved with the plique-à-jour technique.
Admission is free, but reservations are requested in advance. Call 412-261-7003, Ext. 12, or send e-mail to development@contemporarycraft.org.
The gallery continues to exhibit “Transformation 8: Contemporary Works in Small Metals,” a biennial show featuring the work of 33 metalsmiths, through June 30.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Admission is free.
