Sen. Orie found guilty on 14 of 24 counts
PITTSBURGH — Jane Orie likely will be removed from her seat in the state Senate after a jury Monday convicted her of 14 charges, several of which are felonies.
Orie, whose 40th Senatorial District covers southern Butler County, was found guilty of using her state-paid staff for political and campaign chores from 2001 to 2009. The jury convicted her on 14 of the 24 charges she faced.
She will be sentenced May 21 by Judge Jeffrey Manning in Pittsburgh. Until then, she will be subjected to electronic home monitoring as ordered by the judge.
Orie was found guilty on felony counts of theft, forgery, violating the state’s Ethics Act and criminal conspiracy.
Each count of theft carries with it a maximum imprisonment of seven years, while each count of violating the Ethics Act carries a maximum of five years.
The jury also convicted Orie of seven counts of tampering with evidence, misdemeanors that each carry a maximum sentence of two years.
Orie was acquitted of 10 charges she faced, including several counts each of perjury and obstruction of justice.
