SRU baseball salvages split in doubleheader

Junior first baseman John Shaffer slapped a single in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Matt Curtis with the winning run as the Slippery Rock University baseball team won the second game of a doubleheader with the University of Charleston, 2-1, on Monday in Winter Haven, Fla.

Charleston won the first game by a score of 5-2.

The Rock (5-7-1) tied the second game at 1 in the bottom of the fifth when Carter Haponski’s flyout plated Will Kengor.

SRU reliever John Kovalik earned the win after pitching three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out two.

Designated hitter Ben Bechtol led SRU’s six-hit effort with a pair of singles.

n Charleston grabbed control of the first game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

SRU catcher Matt Accardi singled and homered.

Nic McCowin started and pitched six innings for The Rock, surrendering five runs — four earned — on five hits while walking five and striking out seven.
