Pitt’s non-league grid foes in placePITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh will trade one longtime rival for another on its 2012 football schedule.The Panthers will play returning Big East member Temple next year after the Owls rejoined the conference on Wednesday. Temple replaces West Virginia, which will play in the Big 12 beginning next fall.Pitt opens the season on Sept. 1 against Youngstown State and also plays nonconference home games on Sept. 15 against Virginia Tech and Sept. 22 vs. Gardner-Webb. The Panthers will travel to Buffalo on Oct. 6 and Notre Dame on Nov. 3.
NFL player union investigating Saints WASHINGTON — The NFL Players Association will do its own investigation of the New Orleans Saints’ bounty system and asked the league to help set up interviews with the team’s coaches and front-office staff.In a statement, the union vowed to “vigorously protect the rights of all players.”
Police recover ‘Paternoville’ sign STATE COLLEGE — Penn State police say the “Paternoville” marker has been recovered, about a week after it was taken from outside the university’s football stadium.A university spokeswoman said that the sign was found in recent days, a suspect has been identified and charges are expected.Further details were not released.
