Philly airport calls perimeter secure after scare
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia International Airport officials say the case of a sport-utility vehicle that crashed through a fence and drove up and down the runway was a “very rare incident” and the facility is secure.
The airport was shut for nearly a half hour Thursday after Kenneth Richard Mazik rammed through a fence in his Jeep and sped onto two runways before being apprehended five minutes later.
Airport officials said today that perimeter fencing “meets or exceeds all federally mandated standards” and “our airfield is secure.”
Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Ann Davis said security protocols worked because the man was spotted, immediately pursued and arrested. There is no suspicion of terrorism, but Mazik faces DUI and reckless endangerment charges and will undergo psychiatric tests.
