NEW ORLEANS — Two New Orleans police officers are undergoing surgery this morning after being shot during a traffic stop near City Park.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas says two suspects also were shot about 5:45 a.m. today by the officers. One suspect died at the scene and the other was wounded.

Serpas says the officers were taken to a hospital and immediately taken into surgery.

The condition of the injured suspect is unknown.

Terry Smith, an employee of a nearby fast food restaurant, identified the dead man as a co-worker. Smith was angry at police, expressing doubt that the young man was involved in a crime.

Officers remain at the scene as their investigation continues.
