High winds knock out power to 3,000

At least 3,000 Butler County residents were without electricity Friday evening.

Sustained winds in excess of 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, downed power lines and tree branches across the county on Friday.

However, nearly all of those people had their power restored that night.

Rob Lombardo, a spokesman for Penn Power, said Saturday morning about 2,600 customers in Butler County lost power. But by midnight Friday all but 34 of those had power back, and all but 17 had power back by 8 a.m. Saturday, he said.

Lombardo said Mercer County, where about 4,000 customers lost power, and Lawrence County, where about 1,100 customers lost power, were among those most affected by the high winds.

By Saturday morning, all of Penn Power’s customers in Lawrence County and all but a few hundred customers in Mercer County had their service restored.

Parker-based Central Electric Cooperative reported about 600 members lost power across Butler, Venango, Armstrong and Clarion counties.

However, the cooperative reported members in Prospect and St. Petersburg, Clarion County, were hardest hit.

Christina O’Donnell, a spokeswoman for the cooperative, said all but a few members had their power restored by 9 p.m. Friday.
