ALLENTOWN — A Pennsylvania school district plans to put advertisements on the inside of its buses as it tries to deal with cuts in state funding.

Parkland School District's board approved the plan Tuesday night to place ads on the inside of 46 high school buses in its first year. The district's remaining 50 buses would get ads the following year.

Parkland would get 75 percent of the ad price, an estimated $150,000 in the first year. The district says the ads would be age-appropriate.

School Director Roberta Marcus says she was reluctant to support the measure but felt it necessary to fund student programs.

Robert Cohen voted against the deal. He says the school is there to educate, not hawk merchandise.

MCKEES ROCKS — The owner of a Pittsburgh-area animal shelter must stand trial on charges he stole more than $37,000 in state funds by telling a “sleeping” dogs lie.The agency’s organized crime unit says 74-year-old Bernard Dudash collected the money from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for dogs he claimed to put to sleep, which never existed.Dudash’s Triangle Pet Control Services in McKees Rocks contracts pet control services for more than 50 southwestern Pennsylvania communities. He’s paid $30 for each dog euthanized and allegedly collected $37,384 between July 2007 and April 2011 by filing false reimbursement reports.
