Butler man dies after car hits building
A 31-year-old Butler man died after an early morning car crash today at Hansen and Sixth avenues.
Matthew Aaron Scott died at 4:38 a.m. at Butler Memorial Hospital after his vehicle hit the building at 415 Hansen Ave., crashing into the front of it.
City police report the accident happened at 3:15 a.m. when police found Scott trapped in his car after hitting the building owned by Joseph Lutz.
The Butler Fire Department and the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident to remove Scott from his car.
The police investigation found that Scott was traveling northbound on Hansen Avenue when his car ran off the road and across a traffic island and hit a traffic sign.
His car continued across South Sixth Avenue, hit a curb and drove onto a grassy area, through a parking lot and into the building.
The cause of the crash is unknown, and police are waiting for toxicology tests to be completed.
John Evans, city zoning officer, said at the scene this morning that the accident damaged the east side of the building.
“It’s pretty bad,” said Evans, who gave a rough estimate of repairs at $30,000 to $40,000.
He said the building is vacant.
