SRU's Jewel makes NCAA championships

Men's hoops beats Edinboro

Slippery Rock University men’s indoor track and field standout Kevin Jewel ran a time of 1 minute, 53.5 seconds in the 800-meter run Saturday at the Akron Invitational.

The effort was good for sixth place and qualifies Jewel for the NCAA championships.

Also at the Akron Invite, SRU’s Caitlin Hancox placed sixth in the Blue Division’s 800 run with a season-best time of 2:18.17.

The time was the fourth-fastest turned in this year by a PSAC woman.

Men’s BasketballFreshman Chaquille Pratt began the game on the bench, but ended it with a team-high 20 points as SRU defeated host Edinboro 76-68.Pratt’s effort included shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.The Rock (15-7, 12-6) also received 16 points from Aubin Reeves and Devin Taylor.Taylor added a game-high 14 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.

Women’s BasketballDespite forcing undefeated Edinboro into 25 turnovers, The Rock dropped a 62-39 road decision.SRU (5-17, 2-16) made just 13 field goals, as Danielle Smith paced the team with 12 points.The Fighting Scots (22-0, 18-0) were led by Samantha Blazetic’s double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds.
