Dorothy Mae McCandless
Dorothy Mae McCandless, 96, of Slippery Rock passed away at the Slippery Rock Personal Care Home, Butler County, at 11:34 p.m. Friday following a short illness.
She was born in Worth Township on Sept. 1, 1915, to Joseph Taggart and Nettie Shields Taggart.
She married Cecil Marion McCandless on Nov. 3, 1936. He preceded her in death on June 10, 2002.
She and her sister, Goldie, often walked from the family farm in Worth Township to the high school in Slippery Rock. She graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1933.
In her early years, she was a member of the Wolf Creek United Presbyterian Church, Worth Township, and later, after moving to Slippery Rock, she was a member of the Highland Presbyterian Church for many years. She then became a member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed golf at Shamrock, bowling at Slippery Rock Lanes, table tennis, traveling and especially cooking which her family described as “wonderful.”
Survivors include a daughter, Judith Ann “Judy” Barnes and her husband, Dave, of Slippery Rock; a son, Donald Lee McCandless of Grove City; two grandsons, Dan Barnes and his wife, Cindy, of Gibsonia, and Greg McCandless of Virginia; three great-grandsons, Eric and Kyle Barnes and Derek McCandless; one great-granddaughter, Alicia McCandless; a niece, Barbara Trauterman Vivelo and her husband Joe; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; other nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Bernice Taggart and Goldie Taggart; and two brothers, Charles “Skip” Taggart and Dale Taggart.
<B>MCCANDLESS</B> — A private graveside interment service for Dorothy Mae McCandless, who passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, will be at 1:30 p.m. today. A public memorial service will be observed this spring at a time and date to be announced in the Butler Eagle. Arrangements are by <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, Slippery Rock.
