Formerly the Embroiderers Guild, the nonprofit Fiberarts Guild has been affiliated with the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts since 1963. The guild has evolved with the contemporary craft movement into an organization committed to the preservation, development and continued evolution of the broad range of fiber art.
The arts that use a fiber medium include, but are not limited to, basketry, beading, book arts, embroidery, crochet, felting, knitting, jewelry, mixed media, quilting, paper art, rug hooking, sculpture, surface design, stitchery, wearables and weaving.
The Fiberarts Guild provides a support community for artists and others interested in the medium, presents an annual series of lectures and workshops and regularly schedules critique sessions to provide opportunities for individual creative development. The guild also produces juried exhibitions of members' work so that established and emerging artists may exhibit side by side. The Maridon houses the Mary Hulton Phillips' collection, which was assembled over decades and consists of about 800 objects, including Asian jade and ivory sculptures, tapestries, landscape paintings, scrolls and artifacts, plus a collection of Meissen porcelain.Fiberarts Guild members were encouraged to use pieces at the Maridon as the inspiration for their artwork in the members exhibition. The Maridon is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students.
