Pioneers win 1st game

Alec McDeavitt, a Slippery Rock High graduate, scored 29 points to lead the Butler County Community College men's basketball team to its first victory of the season, an 89-78 victory over Eastern Gateway (Ohio) on Wednesday.

John Tyler added 23 points and 12 rebounds, Antawane Davis 20 points and Bill Smith (Butler High) added 14 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the Pioneers (1-12).

• Tabari Perry's double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds led Slippery Rock University to a 70-63 win at Gannon.

Perry was one of four Rock players who reached double digits in points, joining Devin Taylor (14), John Bayardelle (13) and Jon Valeriano (12).

The win improves SRU's overall record to 12-5 (9-4 in PSAC play).

SRU senior forward Danielle Smith posted 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, but a late cold spell from the floor doomed The Rock in a 79-62 PSAC-West loss at Gannon.Slippery Rock (5-12, 2-11) trailed by just four points at halftime, but made just six of its 17 field goal attempts in the final 12-plus minutes of play.The Rock will host rival Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday.
