Andrew C. 'Chester' Gavula
Andrew C. “Chester” Gavula, 86, of Lyndora died Friday evening at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 20, 1926, in Lyndora, he was a son of the late Stefan and Julia (Durnak) Gavula.
Chester retired from the Armco Steel plant in Butler in 1988, following 44 years of service.
He was a member of the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora, the VFW Post 249 and the American Legion Post 778, where he was a past commander, and he also was the past commander for Butler County.
He enjoyed playing bingo, was an avid bowler and golfer, was a Legion baseball coach and had played football for the Butler Cubs.
A veteran of World War II, he proudly served on the USS Radford and the USS Medusa for the U.S. Navy.
Surviving are his two daughters, Melanie Losser of Butler and Andrea (Richard) Doutt of Butler; one son, Michael (Marsha) Gavula of Evans City; three grandchildren, Shannon (David) Geibel, Ashley Woessner and Rachel Doutt; two great-grandsons, Winfield Hancock and Maximus Geibel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
GAVULA — Friends of Andrew C. “Chester” Gavula, who died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 105 Kohler Ave., Lyndora. The Rev. Leo Schlosser, pastor, will officiate.
