Woman dies in Washington Twp. house fire

WASHINGTON TWP — Betty Everetts died Monday afternoon when she was unable to get out of her burning two-story home on Route 38.

Everett’s teenage grandson, who also lives there, barely managed to escape the smoke and flames.

“His hair was on fire and he burned his hand pretty good,” said Richard Lilley of Grove City, who happened to be installing windows in the house across the road when the fire erupted about 12:15 p.m.

A medical helicopter flew Shane Everetts to a Pittsburgh hospital with second-degree burns on his right hand. He also suffered facial and inhalation burns, a Petrolia Ambulance paramedic said.

Rescuers said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Friends said Betty Everetts suffered from assorted “health issues.” Not long ago, she learned she had lung cancer.

Her home was equipped with oxygen. And Everetts smoked cigarettes.

It was not immediately known if that combination was responsible for Monday’s fire.

Everetts lives at the house with her son, Gary “Poodle” Everetts, and grandson, Shane.
