SRU men's basketball thrashes Edinboro

SLIPPERY ROCK — Despite getting a one-point road win, Slippery Rock University’s men’s basketball team took last week’s game at California (Pa.) as an insult.

The Rock was outrebounded by one — and didn’t take the insult well.

“That was the first time since Coach (Kevin) Reynolds has been here that we were outrebounded,” senior guard Devin Taylor said. “He wasn’t too happy about it and neither were we.”

The Rock (11-5, 8-4) lead all of NCAA Division II in rebounding margin this season — outboarding foes by 13.1 per game — and outboarded Edinboro 47-27 while handing the Fighting Scots an 85-57 thrashing Saturday at Morrow Field House.

“Rebounding has always been an emphasis of ours,” Reynolds said. “We like to crash the boards.”

The Rock, winner of six of its last seven games, built a 19-point lead by halftime and was never challenged. The win moved The Rock into a third-place tie with Clarion in the PSAC West.

Aubin Reeves scored 20 points for SRU while Taylor had 14 points and 11 boards, Tabari Perry 14 points and eight rebounds. John Valeriano and John Bayardelle had four assists each.

Taylor is the only player in the PSAC averaging a double-double and he leads the league in rebounding with 11.5 per game.

“This was about as complete a game as we’ve played,” Reynolds said. “I’ve been waiting for us to come out and have a hot shooting game like this.”

The Rock shot 47.7 percent from the floor, sinking 31 of 65 shots, including eight treys.

“The big thing for us tonight was we didn’t turn the ball over,” Taylor said. “We took care of the basketball and our rebounding gave us second-chance points.”

Edinboro (9-7, 7-5) entered the game averaging 82 points per contest, but was held below 60 for the second straight game. Cory Somerville, who played his freshman year at SRU and has more than 1,000 career points, led the Scots with 19.

Edinboro 68, SRU 37 (women) — The third-ranked Scots (16-0, 12-0) overcame a sluggish start to put away The Rock (5-11, 2-10).When freshman D’Asia Chambers sank a jumper with five seconds left in the first half, it was The Rock’s first field goal in more than 11 minutes. It also cut the Edinboro lead to 24-17 at the intermission. The Scots outscored The Rock 44-20 in the second half to win going away.“Their defense pressures you into mistakes,” SRU coach Tanya Longo said. “That’s what they do.”SRU had 21 turnovers in the game. Edinboro leads the nation with a plus-11.4 turnover margin. The Scots also lead the country with 20.1 assists per game and rank second with 17.4 steals per outing.Samantha Blazetic and Renee Brown scored 18 points each for Edinboro. Senior forward Danielle Smith paced SRU with 14 points and seven boards.“I wish I could have Danielle for another year,” Longo said. “She keeps working her butt off to get better.“She sees two or three defenders collapsing in on her every game, yet she’s still getting her numbers. She played a solid game today.”
