GROVE CITY — Grove City High School and Grove City College graduate Bill Allen will receive GCC's Athletic Heritage Award in conjunction with the college's Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Allen was the No. 1 or No. 2 man for GCC's golf team from 1947-50. He earned a business degree from the school in 1950 and worked in a variety of positions within the athletic department for the next 34 years.
Allen served as GCC men's golf coach from '65-88, maintained the college's bowling alleys and worked as scoreboard operator at GCC football and basketball games for three decades.
PHILADELPHIA — Flyers forward Jaromir Jagr, who left the Winter Classic with a leg injury on Monday, has a mild left groin strain, and will miss seven to 10 days.Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren made the announcement on Tuesday.Jagr, 39, is in his first season with Philadelphia after three in Russia, and was one of this summer's marquee free agents. The former Penguin, Capital and Ranger played only a minute of the second period at Citizens Bank Park in the Flyers' 3-2 loss to the Rangers. He was replaced on Philadelphia's top line by James van Riemsdyk.
OAKLAND, Calif. — Free agent center fielder Coco Crisp agreed to a two-year contract to return to the Athletics, filling one key void in the Oakland outfield heading into the 2012 season.A person with knowledge of the negotiations on Tuesday confirmed Crisp would return to the A's, a deal worth $14 million first reported by ESPN. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't made a formal announcement and details were still being finalized. The contract also includes a club option for 2014.
NEW YORK — The NHL Winter Classic between the host Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers was the fifth-most watched regular-season NHL game in 37 years.New York's 3-2 victory Monday at Citizens Bank Park, the fifth edition of the outdoor game, averaged 3.74 million viewers to NBC, according to fast national data provided by Nielsen Media Research on Tuesday.The game produced a 2.1 rating and 4 share, tying the 2010 game. Last year's prime time game had a 2.3 rating and 4 share.
