NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints have broken their 2008 club record for yards from scrimmage in a season.
New Orleans entered Monday night’s game needing 178 yards to surpass the old mark of 6,571.
Drew Brees’ 15-yard completion to Lance Moore put the Saints over the mark in the second quarter. New Orleans had 220 yards and 6,614 for the season when that drive ended with an interception in the Atlanta end zone on a pass that was batted away from tight end Jimmy Graham.
The Saints are continuing to close in on the NFL all-time record of 7,075 yards in a season, set by the St. Louis Rams in 2000.
Syracuse No. 1 for third weekWith Syracuse No. 1 for a third straight week, the top seven teams remain the same in The Associated Press’ Top 25.The Orange received 54 first-place votes from the 65-member national media poll on Monday. Ohio State, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Baylor and Duke held their places from last week.Ohio State received five No. 1 votes, Kentucky had four and Louisville two.Missouri, Connecticut and Florida round out the top 10.
Baylor stays atop women’s pollBaylor is still the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in The Associated Press women’s college basketball poll as the first five teams remained unchanged.The Lady Bears received all 40 first-place votes Monday for the fourth straight week after blowing out McNeese State in its only game. UConn remains second, with Notre Dame, Stanford and Maryland following.Kentucky, Tennessee, Duke, Ohio State and Texas A&M round out the top 10. There was little movement in the poll as most teams had a light schedule for the holidays.
Rockets add center DalembertHOUSTON — The Houston Rockets have signed free-agent center Samuel Dalembert.The 6-foot-11 Dalembert agreed to a multi-year contract last week. The team officially announced his signing Monday.Houston opens the season at Orlando on Monday night.Dalembert averaged 8.1 points and 8.2 rebounds for Sacramento last season. He played his first eight seasons in Philadelphia after the 76ers made him a first-round (26th overall) pick in 2001.
Cubs agree to deals with pitchersCHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs have agreed to one-year contracts with right-handers Andy Sonnanstine and Manny Corpas.The deals, which are non-guaranteed split contracts, were announced Monday. Terms were not available.Sonnanstine, who turns 29 in March, was 28-31 with a 5.26 ERA in five seasons with Tampa Bay. He made 80 starts in 132 appearances.The 29-year-old Corpas spent five seasons with Colorado.
