NEW KENSINGTON— Police say they have a person of interest — but have made no arrests — in the burglary of a southwestern Pennsylvania Catholic church between Christmas Masses.

New Kensington police Detective Dino DiGiacobbe tells The Associated Press the break-in at Mount Saint Peter Church happened sometime after midnight Mass ended and when church officials returned early Christmas morning.

Police say about $5,000 was stolen from church collection funds, along with two digital cameras.

The detective says police don’t believe anybody connected to the church was involved in the burglary. He declined to provide details about the person of interest, except to say the person is not in custody.

The detective expressed shock at the crime saying, “It’s bad enough it’s a church, but on Christmas?”
