PITTSBURGH — A man shot by a Pittsburgh police officer during a traffic stop has died.

Lt. Daniel Herrmann, a police spokesman, says plainclothes police stopped the man in the city’s Knoxville section around 4 p.m. Friday and ordered him to show his hands. Hermann says the officers saw a gun in the man’s lap and that at one point an officer fired shots at the driver as he sat in the car.

Police Chief Nathan Harper says the driver later died on the way to the hospital. His name has not been released.-

A witness said the motorist ignored repeated warnings to stop and that he attempted to drive away before the shooting.
