The Office of the Attorney General has informed the Butler County Area Agency on Aging that older adults are receiving notices from a non-government organization offering to help them file for tax rent rebates.

The Senior Advisory Center, which has a Harrisburg address, charges consumers for this service, officials report.

Although the company’s practice is not illegal, consumers wanting to apply for the Property Tax Rent Rebate Program can get applications and assistance free from the Butler County AAA, the Department of Revenue district offices, senior centers and state legislators’ offices. Consumers also may apply at www.compass.state.pa.us.

The program is open to homeowners age 60 and older who have a maximum annual income of $35,000 and renters with an annual income of $15,000 or less. Only half of Social Security income is included. The program is supported by the PA Lottery and Slot Gaming.

Applications for a rebate on 2010 property taxes or rent payments must be post marked by Dec. 31 this year.
