Support the Troops

Amanda Wilczynski
Any time great time to show appreciation

The holiday season is a time to be thankful for our families and our freedoms, both of which are protected by members of the U.S. armed services.

While it may be easy to identify and say thank-you to a soldier dressed in fatigues passing by on the street, it can be harder to show our deeper gratitude to military members.

Fortunately, there are programs and individuals who dedicate themselves to that cause.

John Cyprian, director of Butler County veterans services, said volunteer work and donations are the most accessible ways to thank the U.S. armed services personnel.

“The biggest thing would be the Toys for Tots programs put on by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to help needy kids or those who have loved ones (serving) overseas,” Cyprian said. “They do a great job.”

Amanda Wilczynski, public affairs officer for VA Butler Healthcare, said the VA offers numerous opportunities for people to thank veterans. “We do a bunch of internal events for our veterans here. Any time people can contribute is appreciated,” she said.

One program offered by the VA’s recreation therapy department is Adopt A Veteran, which allows people to help by buying a veteran gifts for the holidays.

Another recreation therapy program, offered to residents at the VA, takes veterans on trips to places such as baseball games.

“One of the ways people can help, they can sponsor a trip, if they want. And, of course, they are welcome to come along on the trip,” Wilczynski said.

Donations always are welcome, too.

“That donation could be anything from blankets for homeless veterans to personal care items, like razors or socks,” she said.

“We’ll make sure it gets to those who need it. The holidays are a great time to give back to our veterans, but all year round also is a great time.”
