HARRISBURG — At least 10 people died in Pennsylvania highway crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday.

State police said Monday that 326 other people were injured in the more than 1,000 crashes handled by troopers during the five-day period from Wednesday through Sunday.

The death toll represented a substantial decline from the same period last year, when highway crashes claimed 17 lives.

The state statistics exclude crashes that were investigated by other law-enforcement agencies.

Commissioner Frank Noonan said half of this year’s fatalities reported by state police involved people not wearing seat belts. He said more than 100 of the crashes were alcohol-related. Troopers also issued 7,393 speeding citations and arrested 417 individuals for driving under the influence.
