HARRISBURG — The state senator who championed a new law to enable a state takeover of Pennsylvania’s troubled capital was among three lawmakers who said Thursday they will not run for re-election next year.

Sen. Jeffrey Piccola, a Dauphin County Republican who also chairs the Senate Education Committee and authored a landmark school-voucher bill that received Senate approval last month, announced his retirement in a statement that did not explain why.

Piccola will have served in the House or Senate for 35 years when he steps down. He has been in the Senate since 1995.

Rep. Curt Schroder, R-Chester, also said he plans to step down when his ninth term ends next year.

“I feel I have given all that I can to this position,” he said in a statement. During his tenure, Schroder helped push for a new law sought by business groups that limits the liability for negligence of defendants in some civil cases. Schroder is chairman of the House Gaming Oversight Committee.

Rep. Ed Staback of Lackawanna County also said he has decided not to seek a 14th term.

Staback, the ranking Democrat on the House Game and Fisheries Committee for the last eight years, said he plans to spend more time with his family and pursue interests as an outdoorsman.
