NEW YORK — Federal prosecutors in New York say seven people have been charged in a $14 million scheme to manipulate Internet ads for profit.

An indictment unsealed today charges the defendants with devising the international scam.

Authorities were to provide more details at a news conference this afternoon.

Prosecutors say an estimated 4 million computers in more than 100 countries were impacted. The indictment says the total includes 500,000 computers in the United States.

It says some belonged to government agencies, educational institutions and nonprofits.
