NEW KENSINGTON — One person is dead and a second wounded following a shooting that spilled into a dollar store.

New Kensington police said an argument involving up to four people in the parking lot of a shopping center preceded Thursday night's shooting.

Police Chief Ron Zellers said the shooting started in the parking lot and several people then ran into the store.

At least one shot was fired inside.

Zellers said a male victim died after being shot in the parking lot.

A second man was wounded in the arm and treated at a hospital.

Police did not release the victims' names.

The cause of the argument remains under investigation.

MONACA — Police at the Penn State-Beaver campus said the satellite school was closed due to a threat.A Pittsburgh newspaper reported a Facebook post from the university said the campus was closed today because campus police were investigating “information that a former student had posted a threat referencing Virginia Tech on Twitter.”That's an apparent reference to a 2007 incident in which a student at Virginia Tech killed 32 students and faculty.A campus police officer confirmed the school was closed, but referred all other questions to a spokeswoman who did not immediately return calls for comment.No injuries or any actual acts of violence had been reported.

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's unemployment rate rose for a fourth straight month in September while payrolls shrank.The state Department of Labor and Industry said Thursday the statewide jobless rate increased to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in August.Pennsylvania's post-recession high was 8.8 percent in January 2010, and had improved to 7.4 percent in May 2011.Nationally, the unemployment rate for September was 9.1 percent.Meanwhile, the department said Pennsylvania job growth is stagnant.The number of nonfarm jobs dropped by 15,800 in September, to remain below 5.7 million.Payrolls peaked at above 5.8 million in 2008, but after the recession began in December 2007, payrolls dropped below 5.6 million in 2009 and 2010.
