LAS VEGAS — Butler Country Club professional Rob McClellan entered the clubhouse as the first-round leader Monday at the 2011 Nike Golf Las Vegas Pro-Am at Las Vegas Paiute Resort.McClellan shot a 67 to take a two-stroke lead over John Aber of Allegheny Country Club.A group of five from Grove City Country Club, led by pro David Altemus, won the Victory Red Group with a 195 in a best-ball scramble event.Other members of that group were Jack Cline Jr., Neil McEwan, Nick Morea and Ron Vodenichar.
WACO, Texas — On the strength of a 17-3 win over California (Pa.) University, the Slippery Rock University football team has earned a No. 22 ranking in the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll.This is the first Top 25 ranking for The Rock since Oct. 23, 2007, when they were ranked 24th.“We are extremely happy and proud to be back in the AFCA Top 25,” said SRU head football coach George Mihalik. “We appreciate the recognition shown to our young men and coaching staff by the voters in the coaches' poll and will now endeavor to live up to and improve upon our position.”The Rock (6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West) will play at Lock Haven Saturday before hosting defending PSAC champion Mercyhurst College Oct. 29.
NEW KENSINGTON — Three Center Township residents earned medals at the Great Pumpkin Skate held Saturday at the Valley Sports Complex.Danielle DePolo, 12, a seventh-grader at Butler Junior High, won gold in couples spotlight, silver in freestyle, solo spotlight and jump and spin, bronze in open skate.Christian DePolo, 7, a second-grader at Center Township Elementary, won gold in couples and solo spotlight, silver in freestyle.Stefani Hartman, 6, a first-grader at Center Township Elementary, won gold in couples spotlight and silver in the We Skate Challenge.
