NEW KENSINGTON — Police in two neighboring Western Pennsylvania cities are handling a miles-long funeral procession and hundreds of mourners who are honoring a police officer killed by a shooting suspect last week.

A police-escorted procession left a funeral home in Lower Burrell this morning, including a horse-drawn caisson with the casket bearing the body of Lower Burrell Officer Derek Kotecki, who was slain while trying to arrest the suspect, Charles Post, 33, on Wednesday. Other officers shot at Post, who was killed, though Westmoreland County Coroner Kenneth Bacha has yet to determine whether Post’s fatal wound was self-inflicted.

The funeral home is only a few blocks from the police station where Kotecki would have celebrated his 18th anniversary as a city officer this week, but is four miles away from Mount St. Peter Church in neighboring New Kensington, where the funeral was to begin at 11 a.m.

Kotecki regularly attended another church nearby in Lower Burrell, but it is undergoing renovations.
