Jury selected in Detroit underwear bomb trial

DETROIT — A 12-member jury was quickly selected today after two long days of interviews in the Detroit trial of a Nigerian charged with trying to bring down an international flight with a bomb in his underwear.

An attorney assisting Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had earlier complained of feelings of “anger, pain and vengeance” among the final jury pool of more than 40 people, but soon agreed with prosecutors and the judge on 12 jurors and four alternates.

Abdulmutallab is charged with using a bomb in his underwear to try to bring down Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam on Christmas 2009. Nearly 300 people were on board.

Opening statements are set for next Tuesday.
