PITTSBURGH — Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said a moral background is important in rounding out an education in law.

Scalia, delivering the centennial address to Duquesne University Law School on Saturday, called on Duquesne officials to preserve the school’s Catholic identity.

“The Rule of Law is second only to the Rule of Love,” he told more than 1,200 people in his 20-minute address. “I hope this place will not yield — as some Catholic institutions have — to this politically correct insistence upon suppression of moral judgment.”

In a discussion after the speech, Scalia defended his interpretation of constitutional law, which says the document’s words don’t change with time, against critics who call the approach too ideological.
