NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Jurors are hearing the confession of a Connecticut man on trial in a gruesome home invasion that left a woman and her two daughters dead.

Prosecutors played a tape of the statement that Joshua Komisarjevsky made to police. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted of the July 2007 attack.

His co-defendant was sentenced to death last year.

Komisarjevsky, sounding subdued and speaking matter-of-factly, calls the crime “home invasion gone terribly wrong.” He describes attacking Dr. William Petit with a baseball bat, saying Petit let out “this unearthly scream” and looked confused.

Komisarjevsky portrays himself as reluctant to assault Petit and blames Hayes for escalating the crime.

Authorities say the paroled burglars killed Petit’s wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and their daughters, 11-year-old Michaela and 17-year-old Hayley.

Hawke-Petit lived in Slippery Rock for part of her elementary school years.
