This wreath is made of 31 aluminum pop cans and can be made with cheap, easily found materials.

Aluminum tabs aren’t the only ingredients for a successful craft project. This woven spoked wreath is an example of how crafters make use of the cans:

MATERIALS31 Aluminum soda cans, aluminum tape, scissors, ice pick, 3’ bailing wire, hole punch, pen and ruler, 4” x 8¼” paper, permanent marker, needlenose pliers, butter tub lid

WREATHCut a piece of 4” x 8¼” paper. Fold the paper in half lengthwise. Open the paper and fold the ends toward the middle fold. Open the paper and fold the ends toward the previous fold line. Continue opening and folding the paper until there are 16 fold lines evenly spaced. Draw pencil lines on the fold lines.Poke a hole in the neck of 24 aluminum soda cans. Push the scissors through the hole and cut off the top. Trim the edge. Wrap the paper around each can and tape the ends together. Mark 16 sections on the can using the permanent marker. Cut down the side of each can 16 times creating 16 spokes. Cut off every second spoke. Punch a hole in the end of the remaining 8 spokes. Bend the spokes outward. Make 24 spoked cans.Poke a hole in the center of the bottom of each can. Bend a small loop in the end of the bailing wire. Slide two cans on the tip of the bailing wire painted side up. Bend up the spokes on the first can fitting them between the spokes on the second can. Place the holes in the end of the spokes of the first can on the bailing wire. The first can’s spokes wrap around the bottom of the second can.Place a third can on the bailing wire paint side up. Bend up the spokes on the second can between the spokes on the third can. Place the holes in the end of the spokes of the second can on the bailing wire. The spokes of the second can wrap around the bottom of the third can. Place all 24 cans on the bailing wire in this manner leaving the last can open. Hook the end of the bailing wire into the loop at the beginning of the wire. Bend the end of the wire holding the wreath together.Cut upward into the hole in the end of each spoke on the last can creating hooks. Fit the last spokes between the spokes on the first can and then hook the spokes around the bailing wire.

ALUMINUM SHEETSPole a hole in the neck of 7 aluminum soda cans. Push the scissors through the hole and cut off the top. Trim the edge. Cut down the side and across the bottom creating 7 aluminum sheets. Cover the painted side of four aluminum sheets with aluminum tape. Using the butter tub lid as a guide, cut seven 3” diameter circles from the sheets of aluminum.

FLOWERSFold each circle in half. Open the fold. Fold the circle perpendicular to the first fold. Open the circle. Fold the circle again, matching the first two folds. Open the circle. Fold again perpendicular to the previous fold creating 8 valley folds. Cut about ½” into each fold. Round the edge of each petal. Squeeze and shape the flower. Poke a hole in the center of each flower. Trim the 7 bottoms around and around into a coiled string of aluminum. Trim the bottom narrowly when cutting the first few inches and then ¼” wide until the last few inches. Screw the flowers on to the coils. Weave the coils through the spokes on the left side of the wreath.Aluminum tape and bailing wire may be purchased at any hardware store.
