CHARLEROI — Officials in the Charleroi School District say two members of a school sports team have contracted a hard-to-treat staph infection, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

Superintendent Brad Ferko said equipment used by the fall sports teams has been sent away for cleaning. The locker room and classrooms also have been cleaned.

Ferko says this is the third time someone in the district has been diagnosed with MRSA in the last six years.

Twp. seeks halt to drilling referendumPETERS TWP — An affluent Pittsburgh suburb is suing to stop an anti-drilling referendum that a citizens group has gotten on the Nov. 8 ballot.The Peters Township Marcellus Shale Awareness group collected 2,500 signatures to get the question on the ballot that would amend the township’s home rule charter to ban gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing.Township solicitor William Johnson believes the referendum is illegal under a state act that regulates drilling and could expose the township to litigation from drillers or those who want to lease their land for that purpose.By The Associated Press
