SEVEN FIELDS — Reacting to an upswing in vandalism this summer, council on Tuesday decided to consider beefing up its overnight security with a private guard.

The borough already has police protection through a contract with Cranberry Township.

One area security firm has submitted a bid.

Manager Tom Smith said at Monday’s council meeting the proposal is still very preliminary but added council wanted to explore the option of extra security because of vandalism across the borough.

In its contract with Cranberry Township, Seven Fields pays about 8 percent of the township’s police budget, or $307,000 this year, for coverage.

The idea to seek additional protection for borough residents isn’t aimed at undermining Cranberry’s police coverage, Smith said. Rather, the increase in security would only help supplement the job done by Cranberry by adding an extra security presence in Seven Fields, especially during the summer months.
