McCandless tourney attracts 56 players
VALENCIA — Alex Slezak and Blake Benko worked their way through the 28-team doubles field to win the third annual Jamie McCandless Memorial Adult-Junior tennis tournament Monday at Lakevue Athletic Club.
The event was scheduled for the Butler Country Club courts, but was moved indoors because of rain.
The tourney is held annually in memory of Jamie McCandless, a popular BCC junior tennis player who was killed in an automobile accident three years ago.
“We had 56 players and another 44 people watching,” BCC tennis pro Whitney Snyder said. “This was a tremendous tribute to the McCandless family and to Jamie’s memory.”
Cam McCandless, Jamie’s brother, teamed with Chadd Cummings Monday and finished second. Slezak and Benko had to win five matches to claim the championship.
They were presented a trophy by Cam McCandless and his parents.
The duo of Denise Balkovec and Jack Boros won the consolation bracket, defeating Brian Kanterman and Noah Ross in that final.
“This was a unique format that promoted family interaction,” Snyder said. “A youth player at the club had to ask a non-related adult to be his or her partner for the event.
“We had enough teams to run a straight bracket, double-elimination tournament.”
The tournament lasted three hours. Extra effort awards went to a pair of teams: Laura Santora and Reagan Sommariva, Mary Jo Sylvia and Elle Santora.
