HAMPTON, Ga. — The remnants from Tropical Storm Lee pushed through the Atlanta area with a fury, bringing heavy rain and fierce wind.

NASCAR only hopes the miserable weather is gone by Tuesday.

The Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway was postponed Sunday night when the outer bands of the storm doused the track before the drivers could even start their engines. Given the gloomy forecast, officials didn't even bother trying to hold the race on Monday.

The outlook for AdvoCare 500 was much better at 11 a.m. Tuesday, though there was still a 30 percent chance of additional showers.

INDIANAPOLIS — Peyton Manning's consecutive games streak could be history by Sunday.Team officials said Monday that the four-time league MVP has been told by doctors not to practice and he will be listed as doubtful for the season opener against Houston. He is still undergoing tests, but no additional surgery has been scheduled.“As a result of the most recent development the doctors have decided that Peyton will not practice,” a Colts statement said. “His participation therefore, in Sunday's game versus Houston will likely be doubtful. We will update his playing status as required by NFL policy as the week goes on.”

METAIRIE, La. — The New Orleans Saints have given coach Sean Payton a contract extension through 2015.The team says Monday that Payton has agreed to the deal.Payton took over as coach in 2006 and led the Saints to the NFC South title. Three years later, he guided them to their first conference championship, and they beat Indianapolis in the Super Bowl.Payton has a 53-33 record, including postseason, with New Orleans.

ASHBURN, Va. — It’s Rex. By the proverbial nose of the football.Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan ended the suspense Monday and announced Rex Grossman as the starting quarterback, giving the nine-year veteran the nod over John Beck going into Sunday’s season opener against the New York Giants.
