Busy weekend for BCC tennis
PENN TWP — Butler Country Club’s tennis courts will host two prestigious events over Labor Day weekend.
The annual Dave Barnes Pro-Am takes place from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday. It features eight teams of three — one pro, one adult male BCC member, one adult female member on each team.
Winners of the round-robin tournament get their names etched on a permanent trophy in the tennis pro shop on club grounds.
Among the participating pros are Brian Miklavic, tennis pro at Penn Valley Swim Club; Trent Goerk of Saxonburg, girls tennis coach at Quaker Valley High School; Trevor Heck, assistant girls tennis coach at Quaker Valley, and Rob Ojeda, a teaching pro in the South Hills.
“It’s nice to pay tribute every year to the father of tennis in Butler,” BCC tennis pro Whitney Snyder said, referring to Barnes.
Barnes was a longtime boys and girls tennis coach at Butler High School and was the first BCC tennis pro in 1975.
“The Jamie” Adult-Junior, a third annual doubles tournament honoring the memory of Jamie McCandless, takes place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday.
“That’s quickly become a very popular event,” Snyder said. “We’re expecting anywhere from 50 to 75 participants.”
McCandless was a 10-year member of the Butler Country Club junior tennis program who was killed in an automobile accident on Route 8 in July of 2008.
The format calls for an adult BCC tennis member to ask a fellow club member age 8-18 — and no relation to the adult — to be his or her partner. The junior can ask the adult as well.
“The event promotes more interaction among club members of all ages,” Snyder said. “Jamie had a contagious personality. He knew how to make people laugh and he was always energetic.
“Everybody loved him. He was one of the most popular members of this club.”
Snyder said donations to “The Jamie” have totaled $1,000, which will pat for all of the food and drink for the event.
“There will be no charge for the people playing in that tournament,” Snyder said.
Prizes will be awarded after the event.
