HARMAR TWP — A motorist says he’s lucky to be alive after a large boulder bounced off the hood of his car as he was driving in rush-hour traffic on a slide-prone Pittsburgh-area highway.

Jesse Hess, 20, said that the boulder was “the size of a VW Bug. Thank God for my air bags or I wouldn’t be alive.”

PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi says the rock slide onto the southbound lanes of Route 28 in Harmar Township occurred about 7 a.m. Tuesday.
