SEWICKLEY — Rob McClellan of the Butler Country Club may not have made the cut at last weekend's PGA Championship, but he earned a fantastic consolation prize on Tuesday.
McClellan captured the two-day Tri-State Section PGA Professional Championship at Allegheny Country Club Tuesday with a 5-under 135 (65-70), winning by three strokes over John Aber of Allegheny Country Club and Gordon Vietmeier of Vietmeier Golf Center.
McClellan and Barry Evans of Berry Hills Country Club had already earned exemptions to compete in the 2012 PGA Professional National Championship, which will be held June 24-27 at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, Calif.
Seven other golfers qualified for next year's event as well, including Jody Barrett of Cranberry Highlands Golf Club, who tied for sixth with a 141 (71-70).
Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf and Country Club tied for sixth (72-71—143) and was named third alternate.
Denny Dolci of St. Jude Golf Club tied for 26th (148) and John Aubrey of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred tied for 31st (150).
GROVE CITY — Grove City College will induct two former standouts into its Men's Soccer Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend Sept. 24.Ross Carnes (1970) and Chuck Harrington (1973) comprise the 11th class of inductees. Carnes started in goal for the Wolverines from 1967 to 1969, earning three letters. He compiled a 21-7 record in goal in 28 career starts, including 10 shutouts.Harrington earned three letters at fullback for Grove City from 1970 to 1972. A teammate of Carnes in 1969, Harrington earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Honorable Mention Regional All-America following the 1972 season. He became the first Grove City player to be awarded Regional All-America honors.
WILLIAMSPORT — Wyatt Koch, catcher for the Keystone team in the Little League World Series, is the great, great, great nephew of Hall of Fame pitcher and former Butler County resident Rube Waddell.Wyatt is descended from Rube’s younger brother, John B. Waddell Jr., who had settled in Jersey Shore, which is located between Lock Haven and Williamsport.
