Murdick grabs odd victory
BUFFALO TWP — “Double Duty” Dave became “Multiple Money” Murdick.
But it didn’t come easy or without controversy.
Murdick, the Slippery Rock native who drives both a Modified and a Late Model car at Lernerville Speedway each week, finished second in the Modified race Friday night.
Or so he thought.
Brian Weaver of Binghamton, N.Y., actually won the race on the track, leading for 20 laps in a caution-filled chase for the checkered flag that also saw its fair share of lead changes.
But Weaver’s car weighed in 10 pounds too light after the race, which gave Murdick the victory in the 30-lap Pitkavish Memorial.
“I would rather just beat him,” said Murdick, who saw his victory as a bittersweet one. “Still, any time you can win the Pitkavish Memorial, it really means a lot, just because of what the Pitkavishes meant throughout the years. It’s really an honor.”
Weaver and Murdick were swapping leads throughout a race that was interrupted by nine cautions and a red flag.
Points leader Jeremiah Shingledecker started on the pole and led early, but then spun out on what turned out to be a treacherous first turn throughout the night.
He spun out again on the same turn for his second caution, but was able to work his way back into the Top 3.
Because of Weaver’s disqualification, he got second place.
“I was just happy to finish the race,” Shingledecker said, wiping his brow. “When you get two cautions and you have that third one (which means disqualification) hanging over you ... I’m happy with the finish.”
So was Weaver before he heard the news of his disqualification. It would have been his first win at the track.
Murdick feels his pain.
“Our cars were pretty good and pretty evenly matched,” Murdick said. “I’ve lost races by being three pounds light before, so I know it hurts.
“It’s a long haul for him, too,” he added. “He came a long way.”
Murdick was also fortunate for another reason.
When he got out of his car, he noticed he had snapped his left rear suspension sometime near the end of the race.
“I don’t know when it happened,” he said, smiling. “I’m just glad we were able to finish. I guess we’re lucky tonight.”
Murdick nearly pulled off a grand slam of sorts.
He won heat races in both cars, but finished 10th in the Late Model Feature.
“It would be awesome to do that,” Murdick said of winning both features in the same night before he climbed into his car for the Late Model race. “But I’m not going to get ahead of myself.”
Neither did Wayne Carbo of Saxonburg, who won the Sportsman Stocks Feature at Lernerville Speedway for the first time in more than two years.
Carbo led for the final nine laps of the 20-lap feature, holding off hard-charging Bob Egley of Kittanning for his first trip to Victory Lane since April of 2009.
“Yeah,” Carbo said, smiling and shaking his head. “It’s been a long time. It was fun out there tonight, racing out in front.”
Carbo said he didn’t spend much time worrying about who was behind him — or how close they were to his back bumper.
“I never feel safe,” he said. “There are so many good cars out here and there tend to be a few cautions. You can’t take anything for granted.”
In other races:
n Carl Bowser of Sarver started in 11th position in the Sprint Feature, made made up that ground, led the final 10 laps and rolled into Victory Lane with his third feature victory of the season. The win guaranteed Bowser would keep his points lead.“Not a bad night,” he said. “This car — it’s fun to drive. It’s easy to drive.“My dad made it clear tonight,” he added. “He wanted to go to Victory Lane.”
n Jared Miley of South Park picked up his first Late Model Feature win of the season, despite sitting third in points.“I was really hungry for a win here,” he said.
