CLEARFIELD TWP — A sport utility vehicle this morning careened through three yards, took out a step railing, plowed over an 18-foot pine tree and smashed into side of a house.

The driver walked away without a limp or a scratch.

The SUV and unoccupied house weren’t as lucky.

“I fell asleep,” said 27-year-old Harley Stone, who was northbound on Clearfield Road about 9:20 a.m., headed to his home in Chicora.

A coal miner, Stone had just wrapped up a midnight shift at Rosebud Mining’s Logansport Mine near Ford City.

He said. “I was tired, but ya gotta work.”

Fatigue, however, wasn’t solely to blame, according to state police.

“Speed obviously was a factor, too,” said Trooper Joe Zandarski.

Police can’t say for certain how fast Stone’s 2000 Chevrolet Blazer was traveling. But it was going well over the 25 mph posted limit, Zandarski said.

The Blazer went off the road, crossing over the west berm and into the yard at 905 Clearfield Road. The SUV continued into Harold Bundy’s yard at 907 Clearfield Road.

Then the SUV broadsided Dawn Rose’s house at 909 Clearfield Road.
