8 confirmed sick by milk from Aliquippa dairy

ALIQUIPPA — State health officials say eight people have now been confirmed to be sickened by drinking bacteria-tainted milk from a Western Pennsylvania dairy.

Officials with the Brunton Dairy in Aliquippa have said they’re cooperating with the Pennsylvania Department of Health investigation.

Health officials said today that the number of people sickened so far by the Yersinia bacteria is now eight. The illnesses first began to be reported last week.

The bacteria can cause fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea four to seven days after exposure to it. The symptoms can then last from one to three weeks and, in rare cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause other complications.

The dairy is certified to pasteurize milk, but has temporarily stopped production.
