CALLERY — An early morning fire today chased a couple out of their bed and into the pre-dawn dark.

Ed and Judy Conway were unscathed but their modular home in the 100 block of Kline Avenue was badly damaged, authorities said.

The state police fire marshal’s office is investigating what sparked the blaze that broke out shortly before 4 a.m. in back of the house in the area where the living room and a bedroom are.

The Conways were sleeping when they realized their home was on fire, said Chief Curt Huffman of the Callery Volunteer Fire Company. They hustled out the front door with just the clothes on their back, and called 911.

Within a few minutes, firefighters got to the house that is just west of Route 68 behind a Fox’s Pizza shop.

A couple dozen or so firefighters from five departments teamed up and quickly had the blaze under control.

“There’s substantial damage to the interior rear, and some smoke and water damage in front,” Huffman said of the house.

A damage estimate was not available this morning.

Volunteers with the Butler chapter of the American Red Cross showed up to assist the suddenly homeless couple.

Assisting the Callery VFC were firefighters from Adams Area, Evans City, Harmony and Cranberry Township.
