Lernerville set for Silver Cup

BUFFALO TWP — The Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup XX Twin 30s will take place Tuesday night at Lernerville Speedway with two distinct changes.

Last year, the Silver Cup champion was determined by the best combined finish of the Sprint drivers in the two 30-lap features.

Donny Schatz was awarded the Cup despite not winning either race. He finished second and fourth, respectively.

After much consideration, it was determined that the Silver Cup champion must win at least one of the features. The best combined finish between the two feature winners will be crowned champion Tuesday.

The drivers’ field will be inverted for the second feature — meaning the first feature winner will start last and the last car on the lead lap of the first race will have the pole for the second feature.

One World of Outlaws Sprint driver who will not be competing is Lernerville fast lap record-holder Joey Saldana, who stands third in the WoO points race following this past weekend’s action at Eldora Speedway.

Saldana was seriously hurt during a crash in Saturday night’s Kings Royal feature at Eldora. He suffered a badly broken right foreaerm along with rib injuries and a partially collaspsed lung.

Surgery was performed Sunday on Saldana as he had two plates and 25 screws inserted in his arm to stabilize it. He remains hospitalized.

Former Lernerville track champion Tim Shaffer won Friday night’s feature at Eldora and Tyler Walker claimed the $50,000 winner’s check Saturday.

Both feature winners Tuesday night at Lernerville will be handed a $15,000 check.

Butler’s Brian Elllenberger is already qualified for the Don Martin Memorial by winning Lernerville’s mid-season championship race a few weeks ago.

Defending WoO points champion Jason Meyers leads that race again this season. He has 4,234 points on the campaign with Schatz 13 points behind him. Saldana is 31 back, Steve Kinser 62 behind and Craig Dollansky 97 points off the pace.

Danny Lasoski was the 2009 Silver Cup champion while Kinser won the event in 2008. Ed Lynch Jr. is the only local driver to ever win it, doing so in 2002.

Pit gates open at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The grandstands open at 5 p.m. with hot laps scheduled for 6:30 p.m., time trials at 7:15 and racing at 8.
