Crowd shows support for Evans City police

EVANS CITY — More than 80 angry residents turned out at the borough council meeting Wednesday night.

That caused the meeting to move from the borough library to Ritzert Hall across from St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church.

Many residents came to back the borough police department in its contract talks with council.

The contract expires at the end of 2011, and borough officials have discussed contracting with a neighboring police force to provide coverage.

Most of those at the meeting and a heated meeting on June 20 strenuously favored keeping the current police force, which provides round-the-clock coverage and is familiar with the borough and its residents.

Little was resolved, and by borough police negotiator Don Myers predicted the two sides likely would enter arbitration in September.
