Butler High taps newest inductees

BUTLER TWP — ButlerHigh School offers a diversity of sports.

The school’s second annual Athletic Hall of Fame class certainly reflects that.

Wendy Brink, Bill Erdos, Beverly Fry Plocki, Ed Hartman, Jody Imbrie Smith, Scott Milanovich, Roger Puz, Erin Ward Witman and Dave Barnes will be inducted at a banquet Sept. 16 in the Butler High cafeteria.

The ceremony will take place prior to the Golden Tornado’s home football game against Canon-McMillan that night.

Four men, four women and a legendary coach comprise this year’s inductees.

“It just came out that way,” Butler Athletic HOF chairperson Brian Slamecka said. “This is another group of outstanding athletes and further demonstrates the diversity of athletes we’ve had come through this school district.

“It will be fun celebrating the accomplishments of all of these people.”

The 2011 induction class was determined by vote of the 12-member Hall of Fame committee.

Highlights of the inductees’ careers follow:

• Wendy Brink — Scored 1,619 points in her high school basketball career, second on Butler’s all-time list to Leatha Dudek Baker, who was inducted last year.

• Bill Erdos — Captain of Butler state championship gymnastics teams from 1958-61, went on to coach gymnastics at Baldwin High School for 20 years, winning 84 percent of his meets.

• Beverly Fry Plocki — Head women’s gymnastics coach at University of Michigan, winning 17 Big Ten titles and being named Big Ten Coach of the Year 10 times.

• Ed Hartman — Former Butler quarterback and outstanding three-sport athlete who went on to further success at Geneva College, killed in automobile accident in 1983.

• Jody Imbrie Smith — Ranks fifth all-time in girls basketball scoring at Butler with 1,252 points and is all-time women’s basketball scoring leader at Grove City College with 2,288 points.

• Scott Milanovich — Outstanding Butler quarterback who went on throw for 7,300 yards and 49 touchdowns at University of Maryland, currently associate head coach and offensive coordinator of two-time Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes.

• Roger Puz — Three-sport athlete at Butler who went on to stellar football career as linebacker at Penn State University, where he played in four bowl games and played for the Nittany Lions’ 1982 national championship team.

• Erin Ward Witman — Soccer, basketball and track and field standout at Butler who scored 1,000 points in basketball, was state placer in javelin and shot put, two-time soccer team MVP, competed in all three sports at Geneva College as well.

• Dave Barnes — Coached boys tennis for 35 years and girls tennis for 24 years at Butler, enduring just two losing seasons while compiling a combined record of 741-280 with 16 section titles.
