Houck finds his stroke as BlueSox pick up win
Shayne Houck was pressing.
The Butler BlueSox third baseman had just two hits in his last 12 at-bats entering Wednesday night's game against Lorain County (Ohio).
It was his first slump of the season.
And he ended it quickly.
Houck went 2-for-3 — and had a potential third hit, a double, wiped out by an umpire ruling — as the BlueSox downed the Ironmen 7-1 in Prospect League action at Pullman Park.
“I don't know if he got tired there or something, but he got his swing back,” said Butler manager Anthony Rebyanski. “I think he was trying too hard. He doesn't need to. The ball jumps off his bat.”
Houck also drove in two runs to bring his Prospect League-leading RBI total to 23.
He drove in the first run of the game on a sharp single in the bottom of the first inning that plated Matt Berezo. His second RBI kicked off a four-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach.
Lorain manager Joe Rhomberg saw first-hand two weeks ago how potent a hitter Houck is. Houck smashed two home runs at Pullman Park against the Ironmen.
Rhomberg wasn't taking any chances with runners on second and third and two outs in the third inning, intentionally walking Houck.
The inning ended when Berezo was out on an attempted steal of home on the fourth wide pitch to Houck.
“We pitched around him today,” Rhomberg said. “You hope when a guy is hitting the ball that well, you can keep it down and he will hit it hard low.”
Houck is now fifth in the league in batting at .379 and second in home runs with four.
David Kaye picked up the win for the BlueSox, shaking off a poor start heading into the game against Lorain.
Kaye struck out five in 5 1-3 innings of work. In his previous outing, Kaye coughed up nine earned runs in just two innings against Springfield.
“He was a little shaky in his last two starts, but he was efficient with his pitches today,” Rebyanski said.
Submarine pitcher Julian Diaz relieved Kaye in the top of the sixth inning with two runners on base and one out and worked out of the jam.
Wes Rich relieved Diaz in the eighth and got out of a jam and Brian Thompson worked a scoreless ninth to cap the win for Butler.
“We had a couple guys come in and get us out of jams. Wes got the job done,” Rebyanski said. “He's done it all season.”
Nearly a month into the season, Rebyanski is finally starting to see the pieces fall into place for his club.
“They are starting to understand our philosophy a little bit more,” Rebyanski said. “It's tough. Guys are starting to come out of their shell, finally.”
Notes: University of Virginia second baseman/outfielder Colin Harrington will join the BlueSox Thursday. The Cavaliers were eliminated from the College World Series by South Carolina Friday. ... Harrington batted .353 for UVA this season. ... Lorain's hitting coach is Joe Charboneau, who won the American League Rookie of the Year with the Cleveland Indians in 1980.
