BlueSox, Sliders split weekend
The Butler BlueSox split their two games in Terre Haute, Ind., over the weekend, winning 2-1 Saturday before dropping a 13-5 decision Sunday afternoon.
Sunday’s defeat, which snapped Butler’s five-game winning streak, featured three errors by the BlueSox.
The miscues were a contributing factor in starting pitcher Kevin MacLachlan being pulled after just 2 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs (two earned) while striking out four and walking a pair.
Evan Oswald, a Butler High graduate, hit a solo home run for the BlueSox (8-8) while teammate Shayne Houck went 3-for-4 to raise his batting average to .413.
Koby Kraemer paced Terre Haute’s 15-hit attack with two singles, a home run, three runs scored and four more batted in.
n Matt Berezo singled home Jon Danielczyk in the top of the 10th inning, lifting the BlueSox to the one-run win Saturday.
Julian Diaz was credited with the win after pitching 4 1/3 innings of relief, giving up just one run on three hits and striking out four while not walking a batter.
Butler’s starting pitcher, Matt Lengel, also had a strong outing. He did not give up any runs or hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking three.
Slippery Rock Sliders
Like Butler, the Sliders won one and lost one.
Slippery Rock snapped an eight-game skid with a 7-1 win at Richmond (Ind.) Saturday, but lost to Lorain County (Ohio) at Critchfield Park on Sunday.
David Leon, Jon Capasso and James Lundstrom each had a pair of hits for the Sliders (5-11) Sunday, but the Ironmen scored the deciding run in the top of the eighth inning.
Chase Byerly, the last of Slippery Rock’s four pitchers in the game, took the loss after pitching 1 1/3 innings.
Saturday’s victory was highlighted by Slippery Rock’s two pitchers — starter Jeff Barto and reliever Kevin Jurkatis.
Barto allowed one run on four hits, striking out four and walking two in six innings of work to earn the win.
Jurkatis worked three scoreless innings for the save, fanning two and walking none.
Tell Taylor singled three times and scored two runs for Slippery Rock.
