Glade Run Lake being drained

MIDDLESEX TWP — Glade Run Lake is being drained and will be closed to fishermen and boaters, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission said Monday.

It is unclear exactly when the lake will be closed.

“After examining the overall depth of the lake, we decided a partial drawdown would create too small of a fishing area and would require anglers to walk through a significant amount of muddy and unstable land just to reach fishable waters,” Leroy Young, director of the commission’s Bureau of Fisheries said in a press release.

The commission was expected to draw down the lake 10 feet beginning May 24 after discovering seepage had eroded soil below the lake’s dam.

Boating is already prohibited on the lake, but fishing is not, said Tom Qualters, southwest region manager for the commission, this morning.

The commission has already begun moving the lake’s bass, trout and channel catfish to Lake Arthur at Moraine State Park and to North Park Lake in Allegheny County.

It’s unclear how long the lake will be closed, Qualters said, since engineers will need to examine the dam’s concrete spillway and embankment before that determination is made.
